Peptide Storage & Handling: Good-Practice Basics

A research peptide is only as good as the way it is stored and handled. Even the purest compound can degrade under the wrong conditions, and degraded material produces unreliable results. This guide covers the general good-practice basics that keep lyophilised research peptides stable — strictly in a laboratory context.

Start with the lyophilised vial

Most research peptides arrive as a lyophilised, or freeze-dried, powder. In this dry state they are at their most stable, because the water that drives peptide breakdown has been removed. The single most important rule is simple: keep vials sealed and dry until the moment they are needed.

Temperature

Cooler is better for long-term stability. Sealed lyophilised vials are commonly kept refrigerated, and for longer storage some labs use freezer conditions. Just as important as the temperature itself is avoiding repeated swings — taking material in and out of the cold again and again is harder on a peptide than steady, consistent storage.

Light and air

Ultraviolet light and prolonged exposure to air can both degrade peptides. Amber or well-sealed vials help, as does minimising the time a vial spends open. Working efficiently and resealing promptly protects the material.

Reconstitution basics

When a lyophilised peptide is brought into solution for research, it is typically reconstituted with bacteriostatic water, which contains a small amount of preservative to limit microbial growth. Once in solution a peptide is less stable than in its dry form, so reconstituted material is generally kept refrigerated and used within a defined window. Labelling and records

Good documentation is part of good storage. Recording the compound, strength, batch and date — and noting when a vial was reconstituted — supports both reproducible research and sensible stock control.
